I had already planned on making a trip to Chico (60 miles away) but while I was messing about on Craigslist I saw this
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Anyone on oppo know about the Supercharged Mini? 107k miles sounds low, but I'm worried the supercharger will let go. If it does, the car should still run, yes? Is there a way to convert it back to standard if the supercharger does go?
There are probably more issues I'm unaware of which plague these. I'd expect that they'll do 200k without a major overhaul...
It's a vehicle for my mother, who was only sold on the price and the potential fuel savings. I'm guessing I'll test drive it, find the clutch needs replacing, and simply walk away.
If anyone has owned one and would like to contribute information, I'd really appreciate it. Bonus points if someone runs the VIN.
But, if it's in good condition and we find a way to get it inspected sometime this week, I think she may have found her new car...

You sniffed out one of the problems - I may not be recalling the issue correctly, but I think the clutch on the early version of this car was undersized or somehow inadequate to handle the torque. My question would be, can you fit a stouter clutch. And a 10 year old car for 8 grand ....

I am also curious because I'm eyeing an '06 Cooper S automatic for the wife.

Can *I* fit? Right now, no. But I do have a reputable mechanic.
Obviously I'm not looking at paying him as much as he is asking (It's above market value). However, when you look at the 2007 Civic they're selling for the same price, you can see where the price differential comes in.

And you'd think that, at some point, BMW would have dealt with the issue and redesigned the clutch, but who knows?

What I've read so far seems to be that if it has the Getrag-6MT rather than the Midlands-5MT it's a bit better. But it sounds like they just mated the regular clutch up to the better engine, so it doesn't really like high-stress driving. 100K is supposedly reasonable life if you were simply commuting with it.
My hope is the person who owned it before wore through a clutch and bought a decent one to replace it at the suggestion of their car-guy mechanic.
I doubt it.

CP. And if you're getting it for your mother, don't get an S. It'll be a TON more on maintenance and she probably doesn't need the extra power.

NO. The R53 autos are one of the worst transmissions ever created in the history of ever. They are known for eating themselves every 60k miles or so.

Is that the cvt or the Torque converter one?

If it were me, I'd wait for a 2005/06. The improvements on those years is worth waiting for the right example. If only for the same blower that was found on the JCW and a few HP boost.
Are you in Redding? I grew up in that area.

Which ever one was earlier. I think CVT

Yeah, this is the later one. It's a torque converter.

You're a little mixed up. The R50 (non-S) came with the horrid CVT. The R53 is the Cooper S only and came with a regular torque converter automatic for the 2005/06 model year, of which can be just fine.

Yep, I am mixed up. Still not great on reliability though.

Yeah it is a BMW product. It's gonna have that german engineering and that stellar reliability that goes with it.

as a current owner of an 04 MCS, it sounds about right. the sc shouldnt really be an issue, mine lasted until about 128k miles. They are not the fastest cars out there, but they handle decently
